During our exploration of the beautiful Turquoise Coast we will be cruising aboard a Turkish gulet, a traditional wooden sailing boat used by fishermen and sponge divers since Byzantine times in these bountiful waters. Gulet-building is a tradition unique to Bodrum; master craftsmen working primarily out of its harbor have adapted the design of these vessels for luxury motor-sailing, while preserving their charm and grace.
Wide-bottomed and broad-beamed, with superior seagoing qualities, gulets typically feature one or two masts with sails, though most often they motor-cruise through the waters at a leisurely speed of 8-10 knots. Built of wood with a pointed fore and rounded aft, both spacious decks are ideal for lounging and sunbathing. Dining is mostly outdoors, on the aft deck.
We will be using one large gulet with generous double cabins, accommodating 20 guests. Each cabin has an en suite bathroom with shower. The public spaces are elegant and include a furnished lounge. There is a crew of four aboard our vessel, including an excellent chef. Today's luxurious gulets offer a unique opportunity to explore the more secluded and hidden harbors of Turkey while preserving the authentic charm of another era.
