Mode of Travel

The varied landscapes and waterways we explore require that we use an equally varied array of transportation, from the most modern to the preindustrial, selecting each conveyance based upon the needs, and sometimes customs, of each region.

When we have to traverse great distances between destinations, we do so aboard commercial and chartered aircraft. For lesser distances we employ private motor coaches. On our African and South American air safaris, privately chartered airplanes, configured for increased legroom, allow us to travel in great comfort, and an experienced flight crew attends to our needs.

Often, our vehicles are more than just a way of getting from point A to point B. Rather, they are an integral part of the adventure travel experience. In Botswana and India open 4 x 4s bring us into proximity to wildlife. During these morning and evening game drives, which can be of several hours’ duration, all-outside seating give travelers the best-possible photographic vantage, and a local guide helps with species identification. In riverine and coastal environments, Zodiacs and local boats serve the same function as 4 x 4s do on land.

Furthermore, to gain a different cultural perspective, we sometimes avail ourselves of traditional means of transport, traveling in the same way that a region’s inhabitants have done for centuries. In Borneo we make our way along the Skrang River in a traditional longboat for encounters with Iban people; in Burma and Laos we cruise the Mekong aboard a restored colonial-style riverboat, stopping at riverside villages, Buddhist monasteries, and artisan workshops, and in India we ride elephants as we search for tigers. Expect excitement and the thrill of the hunt as your mahout, or elephant handler, guides your elephant over forested ridges, through thick bamboo and undergrowth, or across shallow rivers.
